Qiao Ye. Confession. Fiction. Beijing. Beijing October Literature and Art Publishing House. 2013. 472 pages. 35 RMB. ISBN 9787530213384

Confession is the kind of work that people read in one breath late at night. They want to stop but cannot. It affects them so strongly that they sigh deeply while reading, and re flect upon and engrave it onto their memory. It maintains the feel of a Qiao Ye novel through its consistently moving narrative, meticulous narration, and its unique style, skillfully deflecting questions to provoke its reader to heavy and deep thinking and even agonizing questioning. It is simultaneously readable and ideological, even artistic. That is to say, it is both popular and literary, the disparate styles skillfully and appropriately combined. It could even be said that Qiao Ye's novel is the creation of an extremely remarkable, defining work of art.

In terms of form, Confession expresses detail and originality. Qiao Ye uses a unique narrative style: a return to Western literature with the old but classic dual narrative. This method uses a prologue to introduce the secondary narrative, while comments add a large amount of nonfictional information and documentation. In this way it includes real people, organizations, and events in a fictional story. In many respects, these narrative techniques and skills blur the boundary of reality and imagination, increasing the narrative's credibility and appeal. They also greatly expand the capacity of the text; it still technically addresses how a love story is resolved, but in so doing it more deeply integrates reality and history's concerns and reflections on the issues it addresses. Such a narrative effect in the hands of Qiao Ye is clearly that of a professional novelist when it comes to narrative art, as well as the exploration and reformation of technology. With regard to the reader, the novel's content is diverse, solid, and rich; thus the novel is also beautiful and readable.

The novel's most valuable aspect is the height, width, and depth of its content. At the surface level, Confession gives an account of strange passions, vengeance, suspense, inference, all entwined in the emotional story of the fate of several generations. The story is complicated, fascinating, but in essence, it is only a medium, a leading line that bears the weight of objectively demonstrating current social problems caused by historical tragedies and humanity's evil exploration and reflection. …
