"All this modern technology just makes people try to do everything at once." Bill Watterson, author of the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes," obviously had me in mind when he said this. Multitasking has never been easier. Last week I binge-watched True Detective, mapped an upcoming hike, and searched TED Talks for a video by principal Linda Cliatt-Wayman-all at the same time.

I found the TED Talk, turned down the volume on True Detective, and hit "play." Three minutes into the video, I was hooked. I turned off the television, closed MapMyHike, and was mesmerized by this dynamic school leader.

When Linda walked into North Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion High School in 2002, data indicated that 100% of the students lived in poverty, many came from single-parent homes, almost 40% had special needs, and, 6% were proficient in algebra and 10% were proficient in literature.

Within a year, the school had turned around dramatically. In addition to completely overhauling the organizational structure, improving the physical facility, and ramping up professional development, Linda and her team focused on the students as individuals. …
