VFW Posts Give To Those In Need

A giving spirit prevails among VFW members everywhere. That spirit is especially evident in Post 6739 in Camp Verde, Ariz. For eight years now, the Post has operated a thriving thrift store.

"We've done well enough to get plans under way for a new Post home, which we really need," said store manager Wayne Pouliot.

To get the store started, members were using space in a large building on the main drag of Camp Verde. They split the profits with the building owner. But the Post found it was doing well enough to purchase the building.

Because of their success, Pouliot said they give generously to those in need. For instance, the Post gives a great deal of merchandise to the Navajo Indian Reservation just north of Camp Verde. Clothes, household goods, and appliances are some of the many items given to their Navajo friends.

"We like to do what we can for them because they truly are in need up there," Pouliot said.

The Post also has been known to receive requests for particular items from the needy. Each time a request comes in, members do what they can to comply. Recently, someone from the reservation inquired about getting a computer. Within a few days, a donor waltzed into the thrift store with a computer.

With the help of their new computer, veterans on the reservation plan to start their own VFW Post.

When natural disaster strikes, Post 6739 is always ready to assist. …
