Martin Milner, who starred on TV as Officer Malloy on "Adam-12" and, earlier, on "Route 66" with George Maharis, died Sept. 6. He was 83. Milner was also known for his roles as a jazz guitarist in the brilliant 1957 film "Sweet Smell of Success" and in the 1967 camp classic "Valley of the Dolls."

Milner began acting in movies while a teen, first appearing in the 1947 classic "Life With Father." He appeared as Officer Pete Malloy alongside Kent McCord's Officer Jim Reed in NBC's "Adam-12" from 1968-75. Malloy was the seasoned, savvy veteran showing the ropes to Reed who was, at first, a rookie.

Among Milner's other movie roles were "Sands of Iwo Jima" and "Operation Pacific," both with John Wayne; "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral"; "Marjorie Morningstar"; and "Compulsion. …
