The Prince and The Pauper at the Peacock

London Children's Ballet appeared at the Peacock Theatre from 15 to 18 May with this production which was choreographed and produced by Irek Mukhamedov. Some months before, hundreds of children were auditioned for the final cast of fifty-seven, and they worked every weekend to bring the ballet to the stage. Bearing in mind that the story had been decided on before auditioning, it was an extraordinary quirk of fate that Matthew and Oliver Edwardson, fifteen-year-old twin boys, presented themselves for roles in this production. Just as extraordinary is that they happened to be talented dancers who both have places at the Royal Ballet Upper School for this coming September.

The original score was composed by Timothy Hammond and he put together some very danceable music. The sets by Diego Pitarch were changed by clever means of gauzes and lighting effects, and Kate Ford designed the costumes, which were simple and attractive. …
