Major changes in the world of work over the next decade will require a tectonic shiftin the HR profession, according to a group of high-level HR professionals, academics and other thought leaders.

"This profession is in danger of simply not being relevant to the demands ... and the opportunities that are going to be there for it," said John Boudreau, research director at the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business.

Boudreau presented the findings of a two-year inquiry involving 40 chief human resource officers and other thought leaders to senior SHRM leaders in September.

The group explored the factors transforming the workplace-including technological advances, the "democratization" of work beyond traditional hierarchies and a shiftby many businesses toward using more independent contractors-as well as how HR leaders will need to address these changes. …
