Night-owls and bookworms rejoice, the county is expanding its 24/7 library kiosk system.

People will be able to check out free books and movies from three new digital kiosks that will be set up across San Diego County. These new machines will provide many of the services that people can already get at a brick-and-mortar libraries but they're completely automated and never close.

The first new machine will be installed in approximately six months in Encinitas, but the exact location has not been determined.

"I think it's going to greatly drive the distribution of library products in the whole region up there," Supervisor Dave Roberts said. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to buy the kiosks.

The three new units will be purchased over the next three years and will join the two kiosks that are already in use. Eventually each of the county's five supervisorial districts will have a kiosk.

The devices allow patrons to browse around 340 books and movies in stock, checkout materials, return books borrowed from any county library, reserve books throughout the library system's catalog, and pay fines on overdue media. The kiosks also double as Wi-Fi hot spots and allow anyone nearby with a library card and laptop to go online.

A memo from Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer says the kiosks are a good solution to residents' requests for expanded library hours, materials and other services. Also, long work days make it tough for people to go to traditional libraries when they're open.

"The solution to meet the needs for more service it to offer anytime, anywhere library access with the 24/7 branch library kiosk," Robbins-Meyer wrote. …
