Headliners began 26 years ago with the goal of being more than just a competition that gives out trophies. "We aim to provide ample opportunities for the dancers, including ways to give back to the community," says Headliners national director Shari Tomasiello.

One of the ways Headliners gives back is its Trophy or Charity Program, which allows studios to donate the value of their trophies to organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Headliners also takes pride in its commitment to education. At each of the competition's more than 25 regional events, studios receive takehome video critiques with constructive criticism from seasoned judges. And Headliners' criteria are very high for judges-they must have extensive teaching experience along with excellent training and professional experience. "We are an honest competition with realistic scoring and awards," Tomasiello says. "We want the students to feel good about themselves, and know that they truly earned the award they receive."

Tomasiello and Headliners' president, Irma Ziegler, truly understand what students need-and what competition directors want. Both are former dance teachers; and as a former studio owner, Ziegler recognizes the key issues fellow studio owners face. For this reason, Headliners offers easy online registration, assigned dressing rooms and professional sound, lighting and flooring. Events adhere to a strict schedule, beginning no earlier than 8 am and ending by 10:30 pm.

For students interested in going to college for dance, Headliners offers college scholarships to Dean College Palladino School of Dance in Franklin, MA. It's the fifth year of Headliners' partnership with Dean College, and this year, $450,000 will be awarded to prospective students. For dancers hoping to jumpstart their professional careers, Headliners Nationals includes an audition workshop in which representatives from CESD Talent Agency select gifted dancers to take the next steps toward representation. …
