Ebor is short for Eboracum, Latin for York-much the same way that Cantab is short for Cambridge. (And yes, New York is Novum Eboracum.) This short collection was undertaken to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the York and District Organists'Association, who surely deserve a collegial hurrah from across the pond. York, with its famed Minster and stellar succession of organists and choirmasters, has a high reputation to maintain. In his foreword, Francis Jackson explains that the first president of the association was Sir Edward Bairstow himself. Jackson is represented in this collection by one piece, a rich and well-crafted Arietta. The other composers are Andrew Carter, Nigel Holdsworth, Peter Moger, Philip Moore, Frederick Viner, and John Scott Whiteley, the latter organist emeritus of York Minster. …
