A MESSAGE in a bottle drifts in from Mauritius, where my man in the beach bar saw Gordon Brown take to the air: `It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superchancellor!' The Treasury has now confirmed that he flipped round the island in a helicopter and then chartered not one but two aircraft to go on to his next meeting. He had joined the Commonwealth finance ministers in Mauritius fifteen months ago, coming hotfoot from a meeting of Europe's finance ministers in Luxembourg, and his incoming flight (British Airways) was held up. If he had been driven from the airport to the meeting, my man tells me, he would have been late for the opening ceremony and missed his chance to appear in the group photograph. A helicopter was the answer, and he took to it, twice at the Mauritian police's expense and twice at the British taxpayers'. …
