In terms of the 4th estate, which is journalism, we have not carved ourselves a base of power from which to speak, from which to work. O magazine does not have a column about theatre; Essence doesn't review theatre; Vibe doesn't review theatre; Black Enterprise does not review theatre; Ebony doesn't review theatre, Jet...Sepia...The only glossy publication that I know of that's dedcated to Black theatre yesterday, today and tomorrow is Black Masks, published singlehandedly by an amazing individual, an African American scholar, and an allaround great human being -Beth Turner.

I remember my first copy. I have not missed one. Thirty years! WoW! That is so great. I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed reading Black Masks. I used Black Masks in my theatre classes; my classroom is decorated with Black Masks around the wall. Many days my lectures come from the covers. It has been a wonderful thirty years, and I am looking forward to the next thirty. …
