The Pres' Message

Article excerpt

Since IAJRC did not have a Convention this year, the Board decided we needed to have an official Board Meeting to comply with the By-Laws and to honor our annual tradition. Since it was not practical for Board Members to gather in one place at one time, the decision was made to hold a conference phone call during which all Board Members could participate. A date was set for early September. Working with a service that specializes in conference calls, we set up the structure, procedure, date, and time. I took care of the service fee, which was less than $7.00. We individually took care of our own phone bills. Consensus of participants was results worked well, and the conference call actually took less time than a typical annual Board Meeting. The one problem that was interruptive came about when a person wanted to speak and might interrupt a person already talking. In a live meeting, you can see people and how they react so this seldom happens.

Here is the Conference Call agenda, as prepared by IAJRC Secretary, Perry Huntoon.

1. Financial state of association - An updated report of the IAJRC finances is essential for determining; future plans for the association.

2. Elections - The By-laws require elections every two years for officers of the association. The last election was in 2011. Due to a lack of candidates, the present officers and trustees have continued in office since.

3. Dues renewal & membership recruitment - Membership is at an all-time low hovering just above 300. A significant number of members failed to renew in 2015. A plan to re-solicit those lapsed members and actively recruit new members is necessary to ensure the viability of the association.

Long-time IAJRC member and presenter of rare jazz films, Mark Cantor, will join the Board as a Trustee, effective January 1, 2016. Mark has been a source of excellent ideas at general Member Meetings during Convention, and has volunteered to undertake certain services on behalf of IAJRC.

4. Annual Convention - The annual convention was skipped this year. Members have indicated a desire to have another. A proposal has been made to incorporate one in connection with the annual Jersey Collectors Bash held in June. The financial and logistic possibility of this or another alternative needs to be explored. [Perry Huntoon, Ian Tiele, and Geoff Wheeler will work on vetting possible Convention sites for 2016 and report back to the Board.]

5. IAJRC Journal - The Journal has been the sole responsibility of Ian Tiele since his assumption of editorship. While the overall excellence of the journal is unquestioned, there have been issues of lateness and minor typographical errors. …
