Dr. Herb Silverstein, an ear surgeon who heads the Ear Research Foundation in Sarasota, Florida, is a classically trained musician who seems to prefer to wear a baseball hat while entertaining I find this to be an interesting contradiction that adds bit of mystery to his playing. In this CD, released in 2013, he has assembled the backing of some very competent Florida jazz artists, the most notable of whom are Marty Morell who held the drum chair for the Bill Evans Trio for many years and Richard Drexler, a bassist well known in Tampa Bay area. LaRue Nickelson and Jeff Rupert complete the ensemble, the former on guitar and latter on tenor sax. LaRue, who teaches guitar at the University of South Florida, adds some scintillating solos to the whole, playing in the style of Nathen Page, the late guitarist from Bradenton, Florida, and Jeff Rupert, a onetime sideman with the Maynard Ferguson band, blows imaginatively throughout to complete the picture. …
