Sphinx Competition Kicks off with New President

The annual Sphinx Competition takes place February 3-7 in Detroit, Michigan. It boasts an esteemed panel of judges, enthralling prizes, performance opportunities, guest artists, and this year a new president-Afa Dworkin, who also retains her role as the organization's artistic director.

Aaron Dworkin, founder and former president, announced his departure from Sphinx for his new position as dean of the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance in March 2015.

"I've had this amazing history with Sphinx, and I'm excited to take on this role," says Afa, who has been working with Sphinx since 1999.

"What the Sphinx Competition does for the industry and for generations of emerging artists is not really duplicated elsewhere. I see my charge as really going out and building the community larger and stronger so we can be here long-term-our mission is still very relevant and necessary."

Afa notes that there is a lot of excitement surrounding the jury panel and prizes, but, she says, it's the educational benefits and professional development opportunities that all participants receive as a result of competing that sets the competition apart. …
