The Boys in the Band

The Boys in the Band is a column which will appear periodically in the journal. Its objectives are to give personnel of both recorded and unrecorded bands, band itineraries, venues, and background information on musicians. Similar write-ups by me have previously appeared in the Discographical Forum, such as those about Jimmy Raschel (vol 39, #3) and Hod Williams (vol 40, #2). As a regular column, please see those on the Jimmy Joy Orchestra (vol 44, #4), The New Flexo Label: Johnnie Campbell's Orchestra (vol 47, #1), and the photos of the Whitey Kaufman (vol 47, #2), Moro Castle (vol 47, #3), Joe Kayser (vol 47, #4), and Jack Davis (vol 48, #1) Orchestras. The Boys in the Band is intended to be a resource for researchers.

In the 1970s, when I interviewed George Wendt at his home in Bakersfield, California, he was obviously someone who was tuned into his musical past. He and his wife were fabulous people. George had a sharp memory, only outdone by his musicianship. My first introduction to him was the discovery, as verified by George, that indeed he was the trumpet player on My Gal Sal by Tommy Gerunovitch (Gerun). …
