Aaron Diehl has one of the most original approaches to music that I have experienced in recent times. He executes with authority, has technique to burn (but is smart enough not to show it off) and a mind that is inquisitive and humorous. He writes, arranges and performs as a veteran yet he is less than 30 years old at this writing. The man has humility and honesty and his music reflects these attributes. This is only his second CD for Mack Avenue as leader although he has appeared with that marvelous Mack Avenue Super Band recorded live at the Detroit Jazz Festival the last couple of years. Those compact discs have also been reviewed favorably in these pages.

The music on this disc is all original music, six of the eight tunes written by the leader. "Uranus" was composed by Walter Davis Jr. …
