Here's something near and dear to all our hearts - Sudden Cardiac Arrest. In this issue, and the next, we are exploring the appropriate use and application of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) in the workplace. 450,000 Americans experience Sudden Cardiac Arrest every year and according to the statistical survival rate - application of an AED within one minute produces a survival rate of 90%; within 4 minutes results in a 70% survival rate and after 10 minutes it drops to an alarming 2% survival rate. This struck us as vital information to share with our readers; accordingly the AED feature series was born.

It is the goal of this publication to in fact provide a FORUM for corrections professionals. Consequently, we have initiated a number of "outreach" programs for the purpose of disseminating and sharing collective intelligence about the functioning of corrections. We began this program with our 2003 Subscriber Profile (portions of which appeared in the February issue) to give us insight into our readership's demographics; title, education, facility type and jurisdiction, purchasing behavior and patterns and much more. This information came from our readers via direct mail. The 2003 Subscriber Profile is available upon request via e-mail.

Next, we instituted a Plan-to-Purchase program that encompassed 14 categories; from Apparel to Weapons; including Medical Supplies, Personal Safety Systems, etc. We wanted to know what correctional professionals were planning to purchase, how much and when. …
