Convoque seu Buda by Criolo (Sterns Brasil STCD2024/STERNS2024 CD/LP)

Hailing from the favelas outside Brazil's São Paulo, Kleber Gomes - aka Criolo - is much more than a musician. He's a musical activist whose songs notice those people the burgeoning Brazilian economy prefers not to see: the poor, the street kids and the homeless addicts. Convoque seu Buda ('Invoke your Buddha') is a call to its listeners to rise up in defence of the beaten down.

It is also unmistakably powerful and superbly accomplished. Helped by the able producers Daniel Ganjaman and Marcelo Cabral, Criolo slides effortlessly between rap, soul, old-school electro, dub, Afrobeat and samba. There is real inventiveness in the sonic mesh here. However, the music of Convoque seu Buda is not an end in itself, but a vehicle for some blistering social commentary. …
