Can Non-Europeans Think? by Hamid Dabashi (Zed Books, ISBN 9781783604197)

The provocative title sets the tone for this collection of essays and articles by Iranian academic Hamid Dabashi. Culled largely from Al Jazeera, CNN and the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly, the pieces are combative in style and take as a premise the author's contention that thinkers who approach their subject matter from outside the Western philosophical canon are routinely misread and patronized when they are not marginalized or ignored completely. In this, Dabashi is building on the work of the late Edward Said - in particular Orientalism - and the hagiographic tone of the section on Said is understandable if regrettable.

Despite the fact that Dabashi likes to bang the drum of 'postcoloniality' no matter what tune he is playing, there are some insightful pieces here. …
