Elsevier Science Publishes Second Edition of Rat Brain Altas Book and CD-ROM Set

Elsevier Science has announced the release of Brain Maps: Structure of the Rat Brain, second edition, a neuroscience laboratory atlas that was written and compiled by Larry W. Swanson, professor of biological sciences at the University of Southern California.

Acknowledged by researchers, instructors, students, and librarians as a definitive and comprehensive reference on the structure of the rat brain, this new edition offers completely revised and updated information and is now complemented by two companion CD-ROMs, according to the company. The central core of the print atlas is 73 vector drawings prepared from transverse Nissl-stained sections through the adult male rat brain. These Nissl-stained sections are presented on CD-ROM.

The atlas/CD-ROM combination includes updated atlas maps, aligned drawings, a new summary of the rat brain structure, new sections devoted to neuroanatomical methods, mapping of experimental results on atlas maps, chapters on neuroanatomical databases and 3-D computer graphics models, revised systematic nomenclature tables, and an expanded list of synonyms.

According to the company, enhancements in content are matched by enhancements in usability. The print version has now been produced in an A4 format, which is convenient for use right at the laboratory workbench. …
