'Allegiant' B.O. Raises Questions forY.A. Genre

Lionsgate is under pressure after ??Allegiant,'' the third film in the "Divergent'' franchise, stumbled at the box office, opening to a lackluster $29 million - down 44% from the debut of "Insurgent," which bowed to $52.3 million in 2015, and 46% from the first "Divergent's" $54.6 million launch in 2014. The opening raises questions about the commercial viability of the series' fourth and final film, "Ascendant," scheduled to open in June 2017. The "Divergent" movies were intended to soften the fiscal hit from the end of "Hunger Games," which they may no longer be able to do. In February, Lionsgate's "Gods of Egypt" flopped, opening to a disastrous $14.1 million. "Allegiant's" performance has observers doubting that Lionsgate has truly figured out a formula for young adult films - which it seemed to have discovered in the wake of "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight." "The company now is going to be pressed to shift from the ?Hunger Games' and ?Divergent' era of big-budget franchises to return to its core roots of moderate- and smallerbudgeted films," said Tuna Amobi, an analyst with S&P Capital IQ.
