Corbyn Attacks 'Unbalanced' Economy

Conservative policies have created an "unbalanced and unsustainable" economy that leaves Britain vulnerable to another downturn, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has warned.

In his first major speech to the Labour Party conference as leader, Corbyn told delegates in Brighton the party must develop proposals to challenge austerity and ensure the economy works for the many, not the few. This would include investment in areas including housing.

Devolution a ploy to 'blame' councils

The government's process of negotiating devolution deals may amount to an attack on local democracy, shadow local government secretary Jon Trickett has said.

He said: "The chancellor's crooked smile when he offers devolution betrays his intention to hand over responsibility for the cuts to councillors in order to avoid the blame falling on himself."
