Stephen Jones, former head of finance and resources at the Local Government Association, passed away in August after a short illness. Stephen joined the LGA in 2007, following a 30-year career with HMRC where he rose to the position of finance director. At the LGA, he was instrumental in dealing with the fallout from the 2008 Icelandic banking crisis, helping local authorities recover millions of pounds that had been deposited in the country's banks. He retired from the association at the end of 2012.

I had the good fortune to work closely with Stephen when I was representing the local government sector in advising on spending submissions to government and in detailed discussions with civil servants about funding developments affecting the sector generally. He always displayed the utmost professionalism and possessed undoubted technical skills, not least in relation to Iceland. …
