Cannes Seeks to Reassure with Heavy Security

Europe remains in a state of high alert in the wake of the March 22 terror attacks in Belgium, just as thousands of TV bizzers are getting ready to descend on Cannes for the MipTV market that kicks off April 4.

Following the deadly November Paris attacks, France remains under a state of emergency until May 26, while the U.S. has issued a security alert for travelers to Europe. As the destination for thousands of high-profile business travelers, Cannes is readying the highest level of scrutiny and has commissioned a security audit from Israeli counterterrorism expert Nitzan Nuriel. The city is strengthening control of every entry point, including maritime checks on Cannes bay.

Execs from Disney, Vivendi and Sky and talent including the cast of A+E Studios' miniseries "Roots" are set to be at MipTV, while the star power will be even brighter at the film fest that starts May 11, with movies from Steven Spielberg, Sean Penn and Jodie Foster among those expected to screen. …
