AS THE FALL/WINTER 2015 ISSUE of the Brown Journal of World Affairs goes to print, the global refugee crisis has reached historic proportions, with the UN Refugee Agency currently estimating that there are over 60 million forcibly displaced individuals worldwide. Most recently, more than four million Syrians have left their homes, fleeing persecution and the horrors of conflict. While these crises can often feel far removed from our daily lives, occasionally images emerge, such as those of three-year-old Aryan Kurdi washed up on the Turkish shore, that we cannot ignore. As the voices of these women, men, and children echo louder and louder, the changing patterns of cross-border migration, through both land and water, require global cooperation. These political, economic, and humanitarian consequences have an impact on not only the average citizen, but also governmental authorities and global businesses.

In this issue of the Journal , we hope to provide a discussion that represents policymakers, academics, and practitioners alike, who are all contributing cutting-edge perspectives in their respective fields. …
