International Sculpture Center Lifetime Achievement Award Gala Honoring Kiki Smith and Bernar Venet

The International Sculpture Center presented Kiki Smith and Bernar Venet with the 25th Annual Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award on February 29, 2016 at Three Sixty° in New York City. The evening began with a VIP Art Sale, where guests browsed selected artworks generously donated by prominent sculptors, including past and present Lifetime Achievement Award winners.

The ISC was honored to welcome speakers Helaine Posner, Chief Curator, Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, SUNY and Thierry de Duve, Distinguished Lecturer, Hunter College, New York. Posner shared personal insights about Kiki Smith, saying "Smith is an extremely inventive and prolific artist, motivated by endless curiosity about the world and the ongoing desire to explore the possibilities of figurative art...A true original, Smith has always chartered her own course and, in the process, changed the face of contemporary sculpture."

Smith thanked her many friends at the event and reflected on her life as an artist, saying, "Art has been a beautiful model for trying to find a relationship to time and being a porthole for a wonderful life. And it's a life for me that...has continued to bring me beautiful miracles, personal miracles in my life. So, ocean to ocean, thank you."

Reflecting on Bernar Venet's history as an artist, and the Indeterminate Line works, de Duve said, "The paradox of Venet's Indeterminate Line sculptures, as I see it, lies in the infinitely seductive and, beyond the seduction, moving and delicate balance-the fight between freedom and precariousness. …
