Each month, AMLE turns the spotlight on a member who is making an impact in middle level education. This month, we would like to introduce Guy Gambone, a middle school social studies teacher in Hawaii.

1. AMLE's work is founded on This We Believe. What do you believe about middle level education?

I believe that young adolescent learners are at a unique developmental level independent of elementary and secondary learners. I believe that each student is equipped with a set of challenges and abilities. I believe that all students are capable of learning. I believe that learning is best done through doing.

2. What brings you joy in the work you do at the middle level?

The flash of understanding in a learner's eye is the most joyful feeling associated with teaching. I also feel a special warmth when former students visit me to give me an update on their lives. In addition, I find joy in collaborating with other educators.
