Amar C. Bakshi, who has an international relations and law background, is a rather atypical artist. While working as a journalist for CNN, he started an on-line show that connected people from all over the world and gave them an opportunity to talk to one another directly. Portals, an extension of that project, has been creating a space for personal, international dialogue since 2014.

Portals consists of a series of gold-colored shipping containers located in different parts of the world-Washington, DC, and Herat, Afghanistan, for example-and connected by a live video link. People in each location sign up for 15-minute, private conversations with random strangers within the confines of the containers. Participants, who see each other as life-size projections, are encouraged to talk about their daily lives, but their conversations are unmonitored and subjects vary widely. …
