Daniel Gonzalez and Alden Wright

The AGO Committee on Continuing Professional Education (CCPE) has awarded the 2016-17 Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Memorial Scholarships to Daniel Gonzalez and Alden Wright. Applications for the 2016-17 awards were received online from January 1 to February 15, 2016, and the committee reviewed the applications in late February and early March.

This fall, Wright will enter the Eastman School of Music as a freshman studying organ performance; Gonzalez will also study organ performance at Eastman as a first-year graduate student. The scholarships are intended to support the education of young organists who will make significant contributions to the fields of organ playing and sacred music.

Each year, an entering freshman and a first-year graduate student are awarded a one-year scholarship of $7,500 and $15,000, respectively. The scholarship is renewable if certain requirements are met. The Pogorzelski-Yankee scholarships are presently scheduled to support six different students ranging from the freshman college level to the second year of graduate studies.

The scholarships were made possible by the generous bequest of Messrs. Pogorzelski and Yankee to the AGO, and the first scholarships were awarded in the 2014-15 academic year. A scholarship is awarded on the basis of talent and financial need. The CCPE hopes that more organ students will become aware of the scholarships, and students at all levels of proficiency are encouraged to apply. Applications for the 2017-18 academic year will be accepted in January 2017 through mid-February.
