Closing attainment gap a priority in NI

Northern Ireland's education minister has said his priority is to close gaps in attainment. Peter Weir said action was needed following the publication of the latest school leaver results. The proportion of school leavers achieving at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C or equivalent including English and maths stood at 66.0% in 2014-15, but was nearly nine points higher for girls (70.5%) than for boys (61.6%). In addition, of those entitled to free school meals, only 41.3% achieved those grades.


EU cash to boost skills in Wales

Initiatives to help improve the skills of people in South Wales have received £29m of European Union funding, finance and local government secretary Mark Drakeford has announced. The schemes include providing support to young people at risk of dropping out of education or training, as well as two projects to improve workplace learning and training programmes across the region.
