NI departmental cull complete

Northern Ireland's government has had its biggest reorganisation in 16 years, with the number of departments cut from 12 to nine. These cover: agriculture, environment and rural affairs; communities; economy,education; finance,- healthinfrastructure; and justice. An executive office has taken over most functions of the former first minister unit.


Inquiry into schools closed over safety

An independent inquiry into the closure of 17 Edinburgh schools is expected to conclude before the end of the year. As PF went to press, the search was under way for someone to chair the inquiry and decide its remit. The schools, which collectively educate 9,000 pupils, closed because of concerns about their structural safety. All had been built by Edinburgh Schools Partnership, a PFI consortium.
