THIY call it the "Tofino tuxedo," the headto-toe rain garb that Sunset deputy editor Christine Ciarmello and staff photographer Tom Story sport so fetchingly in the image to the right. A hooded yellow slicker isn't what you'd imagine as the outfit of choice on a trip to the West's best beach town, as named by the esteemed panel of judges in our second annual installment of the Sunset Travel Awards (page 65). But then again, Tofino isn't your average beach town.

"It's been a longtime dream of mine to go because I love places where getting there is an effort," says Christine, who, as the former editor-in-chief of Islands magazine, knows a thing or two about memorable destinations. Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, a five-hour drive from Victoria, Tofino (population 1,876) brings together crashing ocean and age-old rain forest in a startling juxtaposition that feels like the edge of the world.
