Designing for the Stars

ABC'S HIT "DANCING WITH THE STARS" gets bigger every year, with more dancers, more outfits and even more rhinestones. Variety went backstage to meet with costume designers Steven Lee and Daniela Gschwendtner to find out how they keep everyone looking fabulous.

The department has a whopping 25,000 costumes in storage. It may seem like a lot, but there can be up to 120 changes per show, say the designers, with 28 people working 15-hour days. "We normally can't start with anything until Tuesday, and then we start developing the concepts," says Gschwendtner. "From there, it's like, high speed."

"Our turnaround is like, three, four days for these things," adds Lee. "And it's hard because they're not just standing there. They have to dance in it. So everything's custom-made for everybody" The designers also have to collaborate with the stars, helping to tell their stories with each dance.
