'Being a showrunner is doing a bit of everything.'

Courtney A. Kemp created and is showrunner of "Power" which begins its third season this month on Starz. The crime drama has seen steady growth in viewership; the second-season finale set an alltime ratings record for Starz. Kemp was previously a writer and supervising producer on "The Good Wife," for which she earned nominations for a Primetime Emmy and a Writers Guild Award.

Has ft been a major change, going from supervising producer to showrunner?

It's so different. Being a writer is great because you get to come up with stuff. Being a showrunner is doing a bit of everything. It's not just writing. It's also management: managing actors, managing producers, managing a crew, being kind to people, being a good boss, observing deadlines.

What changea have you seen in the industry?

I'm seeing more and more people of color do what I do as showrunners, and that's so great. I would love to get to the point where we don't have to talk about it anymore.
