A New Chapter for Historic Yamashiro

L.A. history buffs were worried about the future of Hollywood's Yamashiro restaurant when the historic Japanese-style building was sold in June. But Jianyi Kang, chairman of property owners the JE Group, says the iconic restaurant is here to stay, with upcoming renovations based on the original 1914 plan, which incorporates a variety of Asian influences.

"We plan to restore many of these features that have been severely neglected over the past 30 years," Kang says.

The restaurant will be run by hospitality company BNG (which also manages the TCL Chinese Theatres) and its Sugar Factory Group, and, apart from renovation of the building, which will be brought into compliance with its landmark status, plans include upgrading the food service with new sushi, teppanyaki and robata bars, and a remodeled lounge area. …
