Ballet's FAVORITE REBEL TAKES OVER the Big Screen

Sergei Polunin's Dancer documentary hits theaters this month.

Ukrainian dancer Sergei Polunin makes his film debut in Dancer, opening in select cities on September 16. As The Royal Ballet's youngest-ever principal, Polunin's notorious exit from the company in 2012 earned him the reputation of ballet's bad boy. "I've always been myself. I'm not trying to change my reputation," Polunin says. "I know I'm on the right path now." Currently, that path is dancing on his own terms. "At first it was hard to let people film me," Polunin says of the documentary. "It was a fight within myself about what to let people see." Thankfully, though, he's allowed viewers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look. "The film is meant to show the life of a dancer. It's not an easy life," Polunin says. "It's a human story; it's about sacrifice." NYCB'S 2016 FALL SEASON

New York City Ballet's new season kicks off this month with its annual fall gala on September 20. The evening will feature four world premieres by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Justin Peck, corps member Peter Walker and principal Lauren Lovette. Ochoa, Walker and Lovette will all be making their NYCB choreographic debuts! The most notable aspect of this year's lineup, though, is NYCB dancers choreographing for their peers. …
