Did anyone else notice how quickly the summer flew by? Here we are again, at the beginning of a new school year!

I hope you had a productive summer-whether that meant taking advantage of professional development opportunities, planning for this year, doing yardwork, spending quality time with friends and family, or just sitting quietly.

In my book, sitting quietly is part of being productive. It helps me refresh, renew, and gain focus. For the most part, sitting-quietly or not- is not something my mom considers productive. An active 85-year-old, she is disappointed if at the end of the day her "only" accomplishments were doing a New York Times crossword puzzle, reading an autobiography, and doing some proofreading for her daughter. There are so many more things she should have done, she says, such as weeding the garden.

Is the key to feeling productive accomplishing the "should dos"? I make a work to-do list every morning, populated with 6-10 things I consider a priority for the day. …
