BRIDGE clubs aren't always the friendliest of places - in fact, they can be downright daunting to newcomers. Most have a sprinkling of aggressive characters, supercilious experts and players demanding to know what their 'rights' are the instant someone makes a slip-up.

What a pleasure, then, to walk into the weekly duplicate held at the Woodberry Bridge Club in White Lion Street at the Angel (every Tuesday, 7.15 p.m.). The atmosphere is that of a cheerful village fete; there's no bar, but there is plenty of tea and biscuits. And, despite a mixed standard, I didn't hear a single recrimination all evening. To top it all, a week later my partner, Anne Catchpole, presented me with a bottle of champagne from the club. We had come fourth, and this was a prize for the best fourth-position score of the month - a rating which I've never seen win an award before! …
