For 13 years of working motherhood, I've told anyone and everyone that when it comes to volunteering, I never lead, I follow. Need someone to head the fall fundraiser? Not me. Need someone to serve at its concession stand? Sign me up.

At my kids' schools, I pride myself on volunteering early and often, but always in small roles. Even in the band I'm in (Rock on, Two Minute Thrills!), I sing backup and am thankful our lead singer organizes everything that makes our gigs so much fun.

I've always felt that between leading a family and leading at work, following was what I could offer my community. And yet today I find myself in not one or two but three volunteer leadership roles, co-leading an employee group at our parent company, serving on the board of an industry group and chairing my neighborhood library's small but mighty Friends group. The first two I volunteered for, the latter not so much.

So now I'm in even more meetings and sending even more emails than ever before. …
