Fadumo Dayib began life as a refugee from her native Somalia. Despite not learning to read until the age of 14, she now holds three Master's degrees in public health and is bidding to be Somalia's first female president. The troubled country has not held democratic elections since 1967 but, despite death threats, discrimination and the fact that swathes of land are in the hands of Islamist extremists al-Shabaab, the mother of four is determined. A Twitter campaign to support her has sprung up: check #Dayib4President as the elections loom in October.

Uruguay has won a landmark legal case against tobacco giant Philip Morris, which claimed the country had violated its rights by controlling tobacco marketing.
