Nineteen percent of the millions of citizens who did not vote in 2008 said it was because they missed a registration deadline or didn't know how to register, according to -, v the U.S. Census. On September 27, National Voter Registration Day, voting rights advocates will be out canvassing on the streets to bring that number down.

Since the last election, obstacles to voting have only increased. In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down a key section of the Voting Rights Act. Many conservative states immediately began rolling out laws requiring voters to show stateissued identification to vote. This was ostensibly to protect against voter fraud, but in practice disenfranchised many-overwhelmingly people of color.
