Homework and organization issues are common to many of the referrals I receive as a practitioner in a high school setting, but it can be a challenge to successfully help teenagers develop executive function skills. This resource is a workbook for teens that serves as a self-help guide for developing homework and organization skills, although the authors are straightforward and upfront in cautioning that it is unlikely that a student will be successful using this resource without adult intervention.

The workbook is divided into three sections. The first section serves to introduce students to the concepts of executive skills and to set goals related to their academics. While I found the first section to be a concise definition of executive skills, the sheer amount of text could be overwhelming to a teenage reader. I also checked a sample of the text in this section to check on its readability; the Flesch-Kincaid level of the paragraph I checked was well above the 12th grade level. Most students will therefore need intense adult assistance to get through the first section due to the density of the text.

The second section of the book serves as a monthly, weekly, and daily planner. Compared to other resources of the sort, I think the planner section is laid out very well, with space for urgent notes, a spot for students to estimate how long they will need to work on an assignment, and a space for a daily and weekly reflection. …
