Congratulations to Jen Ray, our Editors' Choice for the Dance Teacher Video of the Month!

In Grey Matter, Ray and three other dancers, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the time, explore a dark and dreary setting as if underwater, thanks to a slow-motion effect applied during the shooting and reverse motion applied during the editing process. In fact, Ray approached the entire project in terms of film editing as choreography. "To me, choreography in film or in dance is about editing and the sequence of images," she says. "So we focused on improvisation and capturing interesting movements in well-composed shots, and then pieced it together."

That's not to say that Grey Matter was entirely impromptu. Ray grew up alongside two of the other dancers in the video and has taught dance to all three of them. …
