Our first red does not need much saying about it. The Castillo de Almansa Reserva(4) from just south of Madrid is a good, fruity Rioja-substitute with a touch of oak, nothing aggressive or over-vanillaed about it. An excellent slurping wine at 5.30, which will be particularly enjoyed by the young.

The next wine is the masterpiece. Although only Bordeaux Superieur, the Chateau La Tuilerie du Puy(5) represents the absolute top quality of this grade. A claret-drinker's claret, perhaps, because only a claret-drinker could appreciate its quality, but at 5.50 the bottle it is being given away. I ordered three cases on first tasting, but they have disappeared, and I propose to order another four or five before the rush starts. …
