Moving on: John H. Chafee, Republican senator from Rhode Island, will retire in 2000 after four terms and a five-year stint as chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. An influential figure in air, water, and wetlands protection, Chafee says he'll devote his final year to combating global warming.

Mourning: Celebrated violinist and AMERICAN FORESTS life member Yehudi Menuhin, 82, of heart failure. Known for his dedication to worthy causes as well as for his musical talent, Menuhin joined AMERICAN FORRESTS in 1940.

C.D. "Buzz" Besadny, 69, former secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Dubbed "Father Nature" by The Milwaukee Journal, Besadny was known for his work in groundwater protection, soil erosion control, public land purchase, toxic substance control, recycling, and multiple-use forestry.
