The Importance of International Research Experiences for Graduate Students

A recent report from the Council on Graduate Studies (CGS) explores the impact of international research experiences on graduate students.

The report, titled Evaluating International Research Experiences for Graduate Students, outlines the findings of a one-day workshop that took place in February 2016 to examine the current state of knowledge regarding assessment of international research experiences.

The workshop was convened by CGS along with the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Graduate Education (DGE), the NSF Office of International Science and Engineering, and the North American Office of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation, DFG).

As CGS President Suzanne Ortega noted, "While additional research and data collection is needed, international research experiences for graduate students provide unique professional development opportunities and have value in an increasingly global economy"

Brian Mitchell, CGS/NSF dean-in-residence and coproject leader, said that the meeting generated a lot of discussion in the assessment community on how best to evaluate international research experiences. …
