Bring on the Bucks: Memphis Chapter No. 20 Gives Members a Good Reason to Participate

Members of Memphis Chapter No. 20 seem to always get what they want. Whether through educational offerings, networking with other area associations, luncheon speakers or "IREM Bucks," chapter leaders strive to fulfill member needs in any way possible.

"Our main goal is service to members," said Chapter President Janet Slawson, CPM(R). "We conduct an annual survey to accommodate their needs. For example, when we make the commitment to sponsor a course for candidates, we make sure that class happens, even if six people show up and the chapter loses money because of low attendance."

Perhaps the most successful Memphis chapter program is IREM Bucks, in which members are awarded with funny money dollars for participation in everything from attendance at a national meeting to donating their time at the chapters annual golf outing. Members accumulate their Bucks and at the chapter's end-of-the-year meeting each November, they can bid on various items and services donated by Friends of IREM. The IREM Bucks program, now in its third year, earned the Memphis chapter a Best Practices mention at the Institute's Eeadership and Legislative Summit in April. …
