Free (or Almost Free) Resources for Elementary School Educators

Wow! The freebies are still streaming in from the Energy booklet listed in the last issue. If you have not had the chance to call or write for a copy, you might want to make it a priority.

Well, enough of repeating the old stuff. It's time to take a look at another excellent source of materials for teaching children about technology. Plastics is the feature for this issue, and there are two places highlighted in this column to check out the latest on polymers.

My favorite is the Web page located at plastics.org. Once you get there, click on Choose a Selection. From here, there are lots of menu choices, but try not to get distracted for now and select Classroom. From here, you may choose a number of different areas that include technical information, simple chemistry, and even a quiz to test your knowledge of plastics. The biggest feature on the menu is a Scientific Kit available for teachers. By clicking on the kit, you will not only get ordering information, but a whole page of other print resources.

These print resources cover a diverse range of topics related to plastics from energy and plastics, recycling, recycled products from plastics, packaging and plastics, and where we use plastics and more. There is even a free 11 minute video titled The Busy, Busy Planet. Most of the print materials are also available free for single copies. Simply check the items you want, and then scroll down to the bottom and provide your mailing address.

The Hands on Plastics Kit mentioned earlier comes in a small carrying case. It has a loose leaf notebook with curriculum materials and suggestions. …
