The Curtis brothers were, at the time of this 2011 recording, recent graduates of Berklee and the New England Conservatory and had both studied with drummer Ralph Peterson, who plays on this disc. As the notes point out, the influence of Art Blakey hangs over this project - Peterson, Lynch and Harrison were all members of the last versions of the Jazz Messengers and the other players were all mentored by Messenger alumns as well.

All tunes on this disc are originals, with tracks 4-6 being loosely organized as a suite, although beyond the very general inspirations detailed in the notes I don't hear much of a musical interconnection. This suite features some excellent playing, though - from the driving first movement to the reflective middle part and then to the third section, all hands are well represented. Zaccai Curtis and Peterson are the primary voices on "Manifest Destiny" sandwiching an interesting passage of collective improvisation among the three horns, while Lynch's broad tone and melodic qualities are displayed on "Mass Manipulation. …
