William J. Kent, 69 years old, June 27, 2016, after a short illness. Born August 9, 1947, he began experimenting with keyboards at age two and early on accompanied services at his home church, the First Baptist Church, Beckley, W. Va. He participated in school bands, with interest in woodwinds and percussion; however, as he progressed to advanced studies, his focus was on the organ. Kent received a bachelor's degree from Belmont College, Nashville, Tenn., and completed post-graduate studies at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. He served as organist, organist-choir director, and/or liturgist in parishes and congregations in West Virginia, Tennessee, and Florida, and was known as an excellent liturgist and service musician. As organ teacher and choir director, he mentored and helped develop the talent of young people who shared his passion for music. Over the course of his career he became adept in selecting, arranging, and writing music with an emphasis on relevance to scripture. …
